IMPORTANT INFO FOR WEDNESDAY’S RELAY CARNIVAL

On Wednesday evening, Woodley will be hosting the Division 15 Relay Carnival.  With almost 300 swimmers participating, this will be the first large NVSL Meet that Woodley has hosted in 10 years.  Please come by the pool and cheer on Woodley as the team competes against the other 5 teams in multiple relay events.  While at the pool, stop by the pavilion and grab dinner.

The relay races start at 6:30, but to set-up and allow for team warm-ups, the pool main pool will close at 3:30.  The baby pool and playground will remain open until 4:30.  To support the arrival of the meet officials and team representatives, the parking lot will need to be cleared at 4:30.

The Swim Team is also looking to borrow or accept donations of coolers for concessions.  If you are loaning a cooler, please label the side with your name, so we can be sure to get it back to you.  (Woodley is also looking for donations of a refrigerator or freezer.  If you are looking to get rid of one in the near future, please let us know.)

RAIN, RAIN, RAIN = MUD, MUD, MUD

With almost 10 inches of rain in June, the fourth-highest total in the DC area since 1871, the Woodley grounds have just not had a chance to dry out and have become muddy and slippery almost everywhere.  As you have probably seen, the worst areas are taped and coned off to prevent accidental falls and to allow some recovery, resulting in Woodley looking like a bit of a construction zone.  A look we are certainly not going for.

The Board has been and will continue to look at the issue, but unfortunately, the best bet right now is to hope for hot sunny days without rain and to avoid the worst areas.  Reseeding, sodding, or installation of drains, would not take hold until the end of the season and would keep the affected area cordoned off even longer.  Thank you for your patience, sorry for the inconvenience Mother Nature has bestowed on us, and please be careful.

ABOUT WOODLEY POOL - THE ASSOCIATION AND THE BOARD

Who owns Woodley?  Who runs Woodley?  How do things get done?  What does it take to get the pool open each Memorial Day Weekend?  What does it mean to be a shareholder?  What is the future of Woodley?  How can I help?

Rather than answer all these questions at once (and put everyone to sleep), we decided to include a short little section in the newsletter every now and then to answer some of these questions.

Here is a quick overview of the Association and the Board:

The Woodley Recreation Association, Inc. (WRA) is a non-profit member-owned aquatic recreation association.  There are currently 169 Shareholders or “owners” of WRA that each own at equal part of the corporation.

In accordance with the WRA Bylaws, the WRA Shareholders are represented by a 9-member Board of Directors.  The Board members serve 2-year terms with either 4 or 5 positions being open for election by the Shareholders each year at the annual Shareholder Meeting to be held in September.  This year, there will be 5 positions open for election.  The meeting will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Board members are elected to the Board by the Shareholders, and, then, at the next Board Meeting, the specific positions are determined by the Board based on desires, knowledge, and skills.

If you are interested being on the Board, please feel free to send us an email.  We just ask that not everyone contact us at once and crash the Woodley email account.
