With less than 11 hours to opening, welcome to both new and returning members.  This summer is the 60th summer that Woodley has been open for swimming.  The Woodley Recreation Association was founded on June 15, 1954, by 250 families that were interested in forming a nonprofit corporation as a community swimming and diving association.  Less than one year later, on Saturday, May 28, 1955, the grand opening ceremonies were held and the first summer at Woodley was underway.  60 years later, Woodley is still operating as a member-owned and run organization providing a fun and safe place to relax and enjoy the days of summer.  A huge thanks goes to the countless volunteers, past and present, that have kept the Woodley Recreation Association alive for over 60 years!

While on the topic of volunteers, I want to thank the Board Members and Committee Chairs for the planning and work that went into preparing for the 2015 Season.  The best way to explain getting ready for opening day is to imagine hosting a pool party at your house for about 300 people from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM for 107 straight days.  Mary, Sarah, Deirdre, Carrie, Melisa, Ron, Ken, Dan, Janet, Robin, Tricia, Teri, and Pim make this extended pool party possible.  Rest assured, they do a great job of representing the Woodley community and in a way that is a lot of fun.

Continuing on the topic of volunteers just a bit longer, I want to take a moment to ask for some help.  We do have a great pool management company, NVPools, that provides our lifeguards and operates the pool and facilities on a daily basis, but we do need volunteers for many of the other activities such as social events, lawn and garden activities, small repairs, and other special projects.  To ensure a steady stream of volunteers, the Board is working on a project to better identify, describe, and organize volunteer activities.  Over the course of the summer, we hope you will have a few hours to volunteer for one or two activities.

If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to ask another member, the lifeguards at the front desk, or one of the Board Members in person or by sending an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

See you at the pool,

The Board would like to emphasize the importance of safety while at the pool.  Throughout the year, the Board in coordination with our pool management company, NVPools, and our Swim and Dive Team Representatives are working to keep Woodley a safe and fun environment, but we need your help.  Please take a moment to go to http://www.woodleypool.org/index.php/info/pool-rules to review the pool rules yourself and with your family, particularly with little ones that may be new to the pool environment.  Additionally, if you see a safety problem or have a safety concern, please say something whether it is reminding a small child to walk and not run across the pool deck, informing the lifeguard of a wasp nest, or pointing out some other hazard.

And, as always, sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen!

Be safe and have fun!

Are you interested in the Woodley Swim and Dive Teams?  If so, it is not too late to join.  Ages range from about 5 to 18 years old.  Not sure or have questions?  Practices will be held Tuesday through Friday next week after school.  Feel free to stop by and participate, observe, or ask questions.  For safety reasons, please ask questions between age group practices.  The Team Reps will also be there during the week to answer questions.  The best source of info is the Swim and Dive Handbook found at  Swim & Dive Handbook.

The swim & dive teams will again be use an on-line registration system called ActiveWorks.  Links to the registration site are on the Woodley Website (www.woodleypool.org).  Registration costs will be $80 per child to join either the swim or dive team, or $105 per child to join both with a “price cap” of $275 per family allowing larger families (more than 3 children) to participate in one or both teams without breaking the bank.  Registration fees help pay for coaches’ salaries, team t-shirts, swim caps, trophies, ribbons, league registration fees, and insurance.

Come to the pool on Sunday evenings during the summer and enjoy a Woodley tradition of Hot Dog Dinners, Sunday Sundaes, and Raft & Squirt Gun Night.  Hot Dog Dinners are from 4:30 to 6:30, Sunday Sundaes are from 6:30 to 8:00.  Proceeds from the Hot Dog Dinners and Sunday Sundaes support the Dive and Swim Teams.

Also, on Sunday Evenings from 6:00 to closing, rafts and squirt guns are allowed in the pool.  Brave the high seas of the Woodley main pool as epic water gun battles, raft boarding parties, and other swashbuckling fun are the norm.

This Monday only: Hot Dog Lunches will be available from 2:00 to 3:30 and Monday Sundaes will be available from 3:30 to 5:00.  Again, proceeds support the Swim and Dive Teams.
